INTRODUCTION

WHEN I FINISHED WITH the first draft of Trial of Intentions, it was massive—500,000 words.

I began to cut.

Actually, there were a couple of rounds of cutting. In the final round, the following scene was one of the last to go. I like the scene. It’s a good showing for the characters, and it dials up the tension.

And yet . . . I didn’t really need it.

There’s a scene that comes not long after it that accomplishes much the same thing, but also does more heavy lifting in terms of setting up conflict in future volumes of the series. Plus, a new magic is introduced. So, I pulled this chapter.

I’ve had a lot of notes from readers who knew I’d been on a journey from that 500,000 words. They’ve been interested to know what was being edited out. So, I thought I’d share. And what you have here is pre-edit, before I submitted the manuscript to my editor. So, you’re getting a look at the underbelly of the manuscript, too.

Stuff I dig here? The general’s battle command office is très cool, for my money. I mean, his map has figures that move and disappear based on battle movements. I need one of those.

I also dig Roth. He’s a consummate politician. I love writing him, even if he’s a bastard. A well-intentioned bastard, sure. But still . . .
